Master of Science - Human Resource Management (2 Year)
Nottingham Trent University - City Campus
What you will study
Program Description Nottingham Trent University's MSc Human Resource Management (HRM) course is ideal for students from any academic discipline who want to build a successful career in HR. The course is designed specifically to enable those who are seeking to start such a career, to gain a Masters qualification in HRM through completing a course of study that has been approved by the professional body for HRM practitioners, namely the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD).
During their studies, students will explore a full range of HRM approaches, techniques and methodologies. The modules will provide them with a solid grounding in HRM and its practice in contemporary organisations.
The student will gain internationally-relevant skills that create career opportunities in consultancy, recruitment, training and other HR roles which facilitate global business. The emphasis is on applying knowledge, skills and techniques to analyse HRM practices and strategies.
The Consultancy Experience Project (or an Applied Dissertation, on the two-year course) gives students the opportunity to apply the knowledge and analytical skills they have acquired throughout their studies, enabling them to make costed recommendations to the senior managers of a real organisation on a business HR issue.
Successful completion of this course leads to Associate Membership of the CIPD, and is a prerequisite for students to eventually apply for Chartered Membership and ultimately enable them to apply to progress to Chartered Fellowship of the CIPD. Nottingham Business School will pay for the student's membership for the duration of the course.
What the student gains from this degree:
• Demonstrate critical knowledge and understanding of the primary theories and concepts relevant to HRM in a business context. • Apply knowledge, tools and techniques to resolve issues in new and diverse situations within the HRM discipline. • Demonstrate proficiency in the use of techniques of research and enquiry to draw conclusions from a critical evaluation of relevant issues. • Analyse a variety of relevant data used in diverse contexts to support effective decision making in the HRM discipline. • Communicate key issues and arguments in written and oral format to a professional standard. • Take personal responsibility for continuing professional development and develop the capacity to be an effective and reflective practitioner.
If students opt for the two year route, they can add a year’s work placement onto their course. It’s a great way to put learning into practice and gain valuable real-world experience to help boost career prospects once graduating. The placement year will last up to 48 weeks (minimum 36 weeks). If students are unable to take a full year's placement, but have completed the minimum 36 weeks, they can qualify for a Placement Diploma in Industrial Experience. If students undertake a placement, they must take up the Business Research Project in Semester Three. Please be advised that this course has a placement year.
