Bachelor of Arts (Honours) - Fine Art
University of Derby - Derby
What you will study
The BA (Hons) Fine Art programme offers students the opportunity to work with leading artists and educators to develop creativity through experimentation with media, materials, and ideas, supporting progression toward becoming confident practising artists. Students develop individual artistic practice within outstanding modern studio environments while working across a wide range of artistic disciplines. Teaching is delivered by highly respected and internationally recognised artists, researchers, and educators who provide inspiration and expert guidance. The programme equips students with the professional skills required to pursue careers as practising artists or to progress into related fields including community arts, curation, and other creative industries.
All students engage in the creation of conceptually challenging artwork that pushes the boundaries of personal expression. A distinctive feature of the programme is its strong emphasis on practical ‘making’ skills, ensuring that studio practice development remains central across all disciplines. With an annual intake of approximately 30 students, the course fosters a close-knit creative community that benefits from a high level of academic and pastoral support. This supportive environment contributes to strong retention rates, consistently positive degree outcomes, and favourable student feedback.
A significant proportion of the course is delivered within modern studio facilities, where students explore individual ideas and experiment with a range of working methods, materials, and processes. Each student is allocated a dedicated, permanent studio space for use throughout the duration of the programme.
The extensive facilities available encourage exploration across multiple artistic pathways, including painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture, installation, sound, film and video, digital media, and performance. Resources include an industry-standard Apple Mac suite, a large printmaking studio, darkrooms, music studios, and specialist workshops equipped for large-scale projects involving plaster, ceramics, wood, and metal.
Additional specialist resources include a comprehensive Art and Design Library, a professional fine art print bureau, and a digital media equipment centre providing access to industry-level video, film, and photography equipment.
