What you will study

The BA History and French combined honours degree at the University of Chester provides a distinctive opportunity to study nearly two millennia of history, from the Roman era to contemporary times, alongside learning French in small, supportive groups. Students will also explore the modern history of the French-speaking world through the medium of language, gaining both historical insight and linguistic proficiency.

Guided by a dedicated team of historians specialising in Britain, Europe, America, and their global influences, as well as French language experts passionate about sharing their knowledge, students will receive supportive and expert tuition. The course allows for module choice from a wide range of history options, including topics focused on France such as the Norman Conquest, Crusades, Burgundian Netherlands, medieval rebellions, the Black Death, early modern witchcraft and heresy, and the First World War.

Practical experience is a key component of the program; students can work with collaborators like Chester’s PGCE in Secondary History, Cheshire Archives and Local Studies, the Grosvenor Museum, and Chester Cathedral. Additionally, students can enhance their studies with a short placement in Guadeloupe or France during the second year, and in the third year, they have the opportunity to undertake a year abroad. Options include a British Council English Language Assistantship or continuing their history and French studies at a partner university. Students also return to Chester for their final year, where they can develop practical French skills tailored for the business world through a specialised final module.

This course offers a unique blend of historical knowledge, language skills, and global perspective, preparing students to excel in a wide range of fields and careers.
