Postgraduate Diploma - Media, Campaigning and Social Change
University of Westminster - Cavendish
What you will study
This innovative postgraduate qualification equips students with the skills and knowledge required to develop and analyse campaigns and activism for progressive social change, with a particular focus on the role of communications and the media.
As the only postgraduate programme of its kind, the course offers flexible delivery options to suit both full-time and part-time students. Alumni work in not-for-profit organisations around the world.
Students learn how to design campaigns while exploring broader theories relating to storytelling, change, power and the values that underpin campaigning practice.
The course draws on close, long-standing connections with leading campaigners and communicators in London’s vibrant social change sector. An advisory panel featuring representatives from Friends of the Earth, Save the Children, Advocacy Hub, Tearfund, FairSay and the National Council for Voluntary Organisations helps ensure that teaching reflects the skills currently in demand. The panel also contributes to an engaging learning experience through activities such as live briefs and guest speaker sessions. A limited number of work placements or internships are usually available.
The course is intended for individuals with experience or an interest in social change, media, communications, or campaigning within not-for-profit organisations. During the programme, students improve their practical skills, develop a deep understanding of the theories and frameworks that underpin and shape campaign communications, and critically reflect on current and past practices.
The qualification is designed to support those seeking to begin or advance a career in campaign communications within charities, pressure groups or the public sector. It may also appeal to professionals working in corporate social responsibility. Alumni hold a range of senior campaigning and communications roles in charities, NGOs, agencies, think tanks and government departments.
The course team has experience in both developing social change campaigns and conducting academic research into the connections between media, campaigning and social change. The programme is jointly led by Dr Anastasia Kavada and Michaela O’Brien, with additional teaching delivered by practitioners and members of the internationally renowned Communication and Media Research Institute.
Core modules are taught primarily at campuses in London’s West End, while optional modules may also be delivered at the Harrow campus.
