Master of Science - Applied Sport and Exercise Science

The MSc Applied Sport and Exercise Science prepares students for careers as applied sport scientists working with professional athletes or promoting healthy lifestyles. The programme allows for tailoring of studies to match professional interests and aspirations in sport and exercise science, with module options covering a variety of disciplines to accommodate specific areas of expertise. Students can select a Psychology or Performance Analysis pathway developed with industry requirements in mind, with the Psychology pathway endorsed by the Chartered Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (CASEs), the professional body for sport and exercise sciences in the UK.

The course provides substantial practical experience in real-world settings through applied placements and internships, supported by industry-experienced mentors both within the University and in the workplace. It also develops high-quality research skills and the ability to apply the latest scientific findings in professional environments. Students benefit from wide-ranging partnerships with leading athletes, sports teams, and sports organisations, as well as state-of-the-art sport and exercise science facilities, including cutting-edge technology for measuring performance.

Offered on a full-time or part-time basis, the course emphasises the application of theory to practice. Students undertake approximately 150 hours of placement in real-world workplace settings, with placements facilitated through the University’s extensive network of sports contacts, including leading football, cricket, rugby, and swimming clubs, which regularly provide internship and placement opportunities.
