The University of Edinburgh

What you will study

Arabic serves as the primary language for over 350 million individuals residing across a vast expanse of land spanning from the Atlantic to the Persian Gulf. It holds the distinction of being the sixth most commonly spoken language worldwide and is recognized as one of the six official languages of the United Nations.

Persian, as the primary language for more than 120 million people, also ranks among the most widely spoken languages globally. The combination of Arabic and Persian provides an entryway to an intriguing and diverse region, as well as the profound intellectual heritage of Islam.

This program, which bestows joint honors, has been meticulously designed to furnish students with a comprehensive foundation in both classical and modern Arabic and Persian. This will enable students to effectively communicate in both languages and gain access to a broad spectrum of original materials.

In addition to language training encompassing written and spoken aspects, students will also delve into the realms of Arabic and Persian literature, culture, history, religion, and politics.
