College Diploma - Welding Engineering Technology (Optional Co-op)

New Brunswick Community College - Moncton

What you will study

The Welding Engineering Technology (Co-op) program is designed to train learners in weld design, analysis, and the communication of industry quality procedures and technology. This diverse engineering discipline encompasses metallurgy, quality control, inspection, welding processes, power source technology, production procedures, and weld design. Graduates of the program gain the knowledge and skills to effectively communicate the varied practices of welding engineering technology to engineers, designers, and other stakeholders.

The program provides opportunities for learners to use modern equipment, software, and technology. Throughout the program, learners apply their knowledge of industry quality procedures, materials science, metallurgical testing methods, fabrication technology, heat-treatment applications, and possible failure modes of welds. Additionally, skills are developed in computer applications, communication, documentation, critical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork to support the engineering activities of organizations.

The first year of training covers the basics of welding technology and the assessment of engineering drawings, codes, and specifications while applying industry standards to welding and steel fabrication. Immediately after the second term, learners engage in a capstone project involving one week of preparation followed by a two-week applied steel fabrication project. In the second year of studies, courses specialize in advanced welding processes, metallurgical sciences, weld inspection methods, and weld design.

Dynamic work-integrated learning opportunities, teamwork, practical application, and capstone project presentations are features of this program. Graduates are well-prepared for diverse career paths in the practice of welding engineering, including effectively communicating quality control procedures and the applications of welding engineering technology.
