Master of Research - Creative Practice

The MRes Creative Practice at the University of West London provides students with the opportunity and resources to develop their knowledge and skills through a research project of their own devising.

Using the human and physical resources available through the London College of Music, students will develop general and subject-specific research and problem-solving skills and produce a thesis and portfolio of work that showcases their insights into current and/or emerging areas of research, as well as their understanding of how this work enhances professional knowledge and practice in the creative industries.

Through seminars, practice, demonstrations and events, students will have opportunities to establish links with industry and community partners and funders, while developing advanced transferable professional skills to support future careers.

Students will join the University’s research community and receive specialised and flexible support throughout the course, including one-to-one supervision and seminars each semester. Seminar content includes peer review sessions, writing and multimedia content creation support, and methodological and subject-specific discussions.

Additional academic support is available for students who require it, including support from Library Services, Royal Literary Fund Fellows and Study Support.

Through the MRes project, students will design and deliver a methodology to address a research question or problem of their choice, producing new insights into current and emerging trends in their chosen field. The MRes Methods module supports the development of research design, while the supervised thesis enables students to refine and implement their work.

Students will make use of specialised resources such as the Townshend Studio, recording studios, London Noise Records and performance venues to develop creative and research outputs.

Throughout the course, students will also have opportunities to produce research impact content, including concerts, social media outputs, press releases, public demonstrations, workshops and online content, to showcase their work.
