Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) - Civil Engineering (Placement Year)

The BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering is available with or without an industrial placement year and provides a strong foundation for a professional career in civil engineering.

The course emphasises the application of theory through real-life projects, case studies, site visits and field trips, enabling the development of practical knowledge and skills sought by employers. It enhances expertise in advanced areas of civil engineering theory, particularly structures and infrastructure design, while developing a thorough understanding of technical design and management processes. Key design skills are introduced across structures, fluids, geology, soil mechanics, surveying and materials.

Teaching is delivered by highly experienced civil engineering practitioners, supported by study in excellent facilities at the Markeaton Street STEM Centre, which houses specialist equipment including a 10-metre flume, state-of-the-art ground-penetrating radar and a UAV with survey and thermal imaging capabilities. The degree is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators on behalf of the Engineering Council, fully meeting the academic requirements for registration as an Incorporated Engineer and partially satisfying the educational base for Chartered Engineer status.
