Overview
Gravity, Particles and Fields will prepare individuals for a variety of research-intensive careers in mathematical physics. It offers an introduction to the physical principles and mathematical techniques of current research in areas such as general relativity, quantum gravity, particle physics, quantum field theory, quantum information, cosmology, and the early universe, with a particular focus on gravity. Students will be taught by dedicated researchers from the School of Mathematical Sciences and the School of Physics and Astronomy, who are experts in classical and quantum gravity, geometry and relativity, quantum information theory, cosmology, and particle physics. They will learn how to apply tools of differential geometry to real scientific problems, enhancing their employability in a growing field. The program includes a year-long introduction to quantum field theory, allowing students to gather data, analyze results, and develop transferable skills such as logical reasoning, analysis, and effective communication. A key component of the program is the research dissertation, which enables students to explore their interests and expertise in a specific topic. The course also provides preparation for those considering pursuing a PhD, as well as opportunities for graduates to enter roles in engineering, industry, and technology. For those already employed, the program offers a pathway back to academic study.
