What you will study
The BSc (Hons) Accounting and Finance with Foundation Year at Derby provides a fast-track route to professional body membership. By taking relevant modules, students are eligible to apply for all nine maximum exemptions offered by ACCA, as well as exemptions from CIMA, ICAEW, CPA Australia, and AIA qualifications. The programme focuses on employability, grounding study in professional practice to prepare graduates for immediate entry into their careers. Opportunities for live consultancy projects and field trips introduce students to the realities of the modern business world, while the Financial Markets Lab provides hands-on experience using the same technology employed by financial experts worldwide. The course is delivered by professionally qualified staff who bring frontline industry insights into teaching.
Incorporating a foundation year as part of the four-year programme provides a head start in academic and professional development. The foundation year strengthens skills, knowledge, and confidence with extensive support from expert staff before advancing to stage one of the honours degree. This pathway is particularly beneficial for those planning a career change or seeking to build a solid grounding in accounting and finance.
The degree equips students with a sound understanding of key accounting and financial principles, preparing them for management positions in industry, commerce, or professional accountancy roles. The programme introduces essential accounting concepts within a business framework and progresses to advanced techniques and specialist areas. In the final stage, students address complex projects, ethical considerations, strategic business issues, and employ research and critical analysis to develop solutions to real management problems. Choice and flexibility are central to the course, with options for a work placement after stage two and the ability to specialise in two areas of interest in the final year, alongside completion of an independent study on a relevant theme.
