University of Greenwich (Medway Campus)
What you will study
This accredited BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering (Extended) degree gives students grounding in the subject plus an extra year to develop their study skills. It has lower entry requirements than the standard BEng. On this undergraduate course, students will study a range of modules in areas such as construction management and technology, engineering geology, hydraulics and soil mechanics. They'll also study water engineering, bridge design and the design of concrete structures.
The degree is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators on behalf of the Engineering Council for meeting the partial academic requirements for registration as a Chartered Engineer.
Students will be taught by an experienced team whose expertise and knowledge closely reflects the modules of this course. The team includes senior academics, professional practitioners with industry experience, lab technicians, and external experts who provide guest lectures on some modules. The PhD researchers also offer lab support, which undergraduate students find very useful.
Learners opting for a sandwich year go to a range of companies and organizations of varying sizes for their placements, including large multi-national firms, clients, consultants, contractors, government agencies, and small to medium sized companies engaged in design, construction, maintenance and supply chain activities. Previous students have worked in railways, water, highways, ports, structural design offices, construction and client organizations.
The BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering (Extended) course is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills to work as a professional engineer. Career options include roles in construction, the water industry, and environmental and coastal defence. Graduates could also pursue postgraduate study.
