What you will study

Lakehead University’s Faculty of Education prepares prospective teachers for a dynamic and rewarding career through unique and innovative programming. By emphasizing critical thinking skills and collaborative learning, students will have the flexibility to explore the teaching methods, concepts and values that are meaningful to them.

This program emphasizes practical, experiential learning to ensure students are fully prepared to enter into the workforce post-graduation. Lakehead University’s programs are continually adapted to encompass a variety of educational settings and training opportunities in two divisions: • Primary-Junior (P/J): JK – Grade 6 • Intermediate-Senior (I/S): Grades 7-12

The Concurrent Education program allows students to take courses in both the Faculty of Education and the faculty offering their academic major before taking two years exclusively with the Faculty of Education; five-year program.

This program will show students that outdoor recreation plays an increasingly important role in society, contributing to mental and physical health, family cohesion, culture, environmental appreciation, and economic development. Experiential program provides students with the opportunity to think critically about the world around them and what it means to live in a more environmentally and socially just world.

Many of these courses involve interaction with experts in the field and engage students in experiential, service learning projects that make a difference in communities. This program’s goal is to prepare students for success in this challenging and rapidly changing industry, from planning and leading guided tours to assessing and creating visitor experiences for communities and parks organizations.

This program offers a one-of-a-kind concentration in Nature-Based Therapeutic Recreation, as well as double degree options with Geography, History, Gender and Women’s Studies, and Natural Science (Biology). Concurrent Education is also an option, allowing students to complete their Outdoor Recreation degree and immediately enter into the two-year professional Education program.
