Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) - Automotive Engineering (Placement Year) (H341)

Loughborough University - Loughborough Campus

What you will study

The Bachelor of Engineering in Automotive Engineering will allow students to acquire a broad understanding of engineering science as it is applied to automobile design, development and manufacture, with considerable emphasis given to the use of modern analytical and Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) methods.

The course teaches the fundamentals of engineering, such as mechanics, thermodynamics and control, and applies them to help students understand how automobiles work and how they can be made to work better in the future. This focus continues with the teaching of vehicle design, ultimately leading to the complete design of a vehicle. A range of automotive modules will introduce students to specialist topics such as ground vehicle aerodynamics and vehicle handling. The course is designed to develop engineers with strong analytical, modelling, experimental and design ability, but also with excellent communication and team working skills.

The program includes a week of vehicle testing at the MIRA proving ground. This experience, unique to Loughborough University courses, is an opportunity to put the theory to the test through the correlation of actual vehicle behavior with simulation models. The department also supports a student-led team to design, test and race a new Formula Student car each year. All students can get involved in this in their own time.
