The course is delivered at Derby Theatre, a fully equipped professional theatre and major live performance venue, providing students with valuable industry experience and contacts throughout their studies. The theatre arts programme develops students’ theatre and performance skills, including acting, directing and devising, in preparation for careers as professional theatre artists. Students have numerous opportunities to showcase their work and may take part in performances at regional, national and international levels.

This dynamic and exciting theatre arts programme is taught by practising professional artists with expertise in their fields. Centred on process, experimentation and risk-taking, the programme exposes students to a broad range of practices to support the development of theatre-making and performance skills. A key feature of the course is the opportunity for professional work experience within Derby Theatre or partner organisations, contributing to the development of each student’s professional portfolio. Students participate in a variety of public performances throughout their studies, in venues such as main house and studio theatres, community spaces, schools and arts centres.

The inclusion of a foundation year within the four-year study programme provides students with an early advantage in both academic and professional development. The foundation year helps students strengthen their skills, knowledge and confidence—with extensive support from expert staff—before progressing to stage one of the honours degree. It is also a valuable option for those considering a career change and seeking to become familiar with new subject areas.

Degrees with a foundation year are continuous, meaning students do not need to reapply once the first year has been successfully completed.
