Bachelor of Science (Honours) - Architectural Technology and Practice
University of Derby - Derby
What you will study
The BSc (Hons) Architectural Technology and Practice has a longstanding reputation for producing high-calibre and forward-thinking architectural technologists, with an exceptional track record for graduate employability. This degree equips students with a recognised professional qualification and the latest industry knowledge. It is one of the UK’s longest-established courses accredited by the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT), with original accreditation dating back to 1997, and has since developed a strong reputation.
The programme promotes high professional standards, being one of only a few CIAT Centres of Excellence in the UK and abroad. Learning is delivered through practical architectural design and technology projects, field trips, and guest lectures from leading professionals. Students also have the opportunity to gain vital practical experience through a year-long industry placement. Extensive links with major sector organisations locally, nationally, and internationally enhance employability, with 100% of graduates employed in professional or managerial roles within six months of graduation (DLHE 2016). Graduates are prepared for positions in architectural practice, consultancy, government, property development, and building contracting.
This course is designed around the core subject knowledge requirements of the CIAT and combines live projects, advanced technical design, integrated environmental approaches, and the application of Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology and building simulation systems. Flexibility is a key feature, with options to study full-time with or without an industrial placement year, or to “top up” existing qualifications such as an HND or foundation degree to a full bachelor’s degree, subject to CIAT requirements. Part-time study is available, with a minimum duration of five years, and day-release mode is guaranteed for the final year of the degree. Direct entry into later stages is possible for applicants with relevant qualifications or suitable work experience, subject to interview.
