Overview

Students will first complete their Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics. Once complete they will move into the two years of their Bachelor of Education.

Mathematics is an integral part of our everyday lives and is in the background of simple tasks like driving a car, playing video games, searching information using Google, or paying bills online, as well as much more complicated things like predicting the weather, space travel or medical imaging. As the foundation of many scientific disciplines, Mathematics is the study of numbers, patterns, space, and change. If you are a problem-solver, logical thinker and enjoy working independently, consider an undergraduate degree in Mathematics.

The Bachelor of Arts option is great for students who, in addition to math, are interested in the social sciences or humanities. They will choose from one of three streams: Pure Mathematics; Applied Mathematics; or General Mathematics. Each area provides students with a solid foundation in Mathematics, and the Honours program places a large emphasis on research. Students may choose to combine a Mathematics degree with another major or minor degree of their choice.

After completing their Bachelor of Arts, students will begin Nipissing University's Bachelor of Education program, which was one of the first pre-service teacher education programs to be fully accredited by the Ontario College of Teachers.

The Bachelor of Education program is part of the Schulich School of Education and meets the requirements of the Ontario College of Teachers for teacher certification (Certificate of Qualification). It is open to applicants presenting proof of graduation with an approved undergraduate degree from an accredited university. The program provided by the Schulich School of Education is rigorous and demands a high degree of commitment. To be successful, a student must display sensitivity to pupils, a sense of responsibility to the teaching profession, and a respect for knowledge.

Candidates may apply to enroll in one of three divisions in the program:

P/J -- Primary/Junior (Junior Kindergarten to Grade 6) J/I -- Junior/Intermediate (Grades 4 to 10) I/S -- Intermediate/Senior (Grades 7 to 12)

Upon successful completion of all six years, students graduate with both a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Education degree.
