Langara College
Latin American Studies at Langara College provides an interdisciplinary approach to learning about the geography, culture, history, and political economy of this diverse region.
The curriculum features core courses taught by a team of instructors whose diverse backgrounds enable them to bring unique perspectives to the classroom. Elective courses from a range of departments across the College feed into and enhance the program.
All the courses are university-transferable. The courses can be taken for general interest, or applied toward the Associate of Arts Degree or the Arts and Science Diploma in Latin American Studies. Many students go on to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Latin American Studies or in a related discipline.
Students gain a broad understanding of contemporary issues and develop a critical and informed view of Latin American history and culture. In addition, students develop real-world skills that are necessary to achieving success, such as:
• Critical thinking and analysis • Research, writing, and communications • Understanding of international issues • Cultural awareness and sensitivity • A sense of global citizenship
Latin American Studies offers opportunities for students to connect with people and organizations from the vibrant local Latin American community. A non-credit lecture series, film screenings, and Latin America Week are just a selection of the activities featured outside the classroom.
