Bachelor of Laws - English and French Law (Licence) (M123)

University of Essex - Colchester Campus

What you will study

This challenging and competitive course gives students the rewarding intellectual experience of discovering the richness of both the French and English legal cultures. Essex is one of only a few universities in the UK which put students on the right path to qualify for legal practice in both the UK and France. The first two years on their prestigious LLB English and French Law course are spent at Essex, where students take the required modules in English Law, meeting the requirements for the academic stages of training to become a solicitor or barrister in the UK. Students also take French law in both years, which is taught in French.

Not only will students learn legal rules, but they will also consider the function of law in society, the philosophy of law, policy issues and law reform. For instance, they address the rights of consumers, family members, prisoners, householders, workers and children. They'll also cover topics including, but not limited to:

• The functions of the three branches of government (executive, legislative and judicial) • UK and French constitutional law • Law of trusts • Principles of negligence • Criminal liability

In the third year, students study at a partner institution in France, where they follow modules in French law to obtain the Licence en Droit.

At Essex, they are ranked in the top 100 Law Schools in the THE World University Rankings 2020 and their Human Rights Centre is recognized internationally. They are proud of their network of international contact and are actively engaged in debates about the meaning of justice in the UK and beyond. They work with the United Nations and governments, human rights organizations and corporations all over the world.

Please note that students are required to be bilingual in French and English in order to be accepted onto this course.
