What you will study

The MSc International Business and Marketing at Derby focuses on applied analysis in international business sectors, markets, marketing, international policy, and global strategy. The programme enables students to engage with business leaders through guest lectures, consultancy projects, case studies, and professional mentoring. Students gain hands-on experience in the Financial Markets Lab, using real-world data to conduct research into companies and markets across the globe. The teaching team combines industry experience, extensive professional contacts, and a strong research profile, while the diverse student cohort enriches understanding of global business and cultural diversity. Variations of the course include MSc International Business and Finance, MSc International Business, and MSc International Business and HRM.

In tune with the needs of today’s business world, the MSc is designed to develop the next generation of forward-thinking, ambitious business and marketing professionals with a global outlook. The multidisciplinary course provides a thorough understanding of economic, marketing, strategic, legal, and cultural factors affecting international business. It integrates subjects such as strategy, international economics, marketing, brand management, and law. Real-world case studies support applied research skills, including business, marketing, international economic, and market analysis, as well as the creation and implementation of strategic marketing plans that address business challenges innovatively.

The Financial Markets Lab provides students with practical experience using the same data and technology as global financial and business professionals. This enables applied analysis using statistical software and in-depth insights into real-time market and international economic and financial data.

The MSc programme benefits from strong partnerships with local, national, and international business leaders. Collaborations with organisations such as Lloyds Bank, Smiths of Derby, Eversheds, Price Waterhouse Cooper, PKF Cooper Parry, and marketing analytics firms including GI Solutions Group enrich the curriculum with guest lectures and masterclasses. Students also expand professional networks through Institute of Directors workshops, company taster days, and events hosted by the University’s Network of Entrepreneurs. Company visits, including tours of Pride Park Stadium, Derby Arena, Crown Derby, and epm:technology, provide additional industry insight.

Professional mentoring is available from experienced business figures, including international trade experts, banking specialists, and senior marketing managers. Career development planning is embedded in the programme, supported by personal tutors and access to the University’s professional career service during and after study.

Students develop a portfolio of skills by contributing to regional specialist research projects or participating in marketing consultancy projects with industry partners. Previous projects include economic impact studies of the Buxton Festival, branding initiatives for Haddon Hall, and customer research for the Derwent Rural Counselling Service. Opportunities to participate in competitions such as the IBM University Business Challenge and the University Trading Challenge further enhance practical experience, while research may be published in the University’s monthly Economic Bulletin and the academic journal Critical Perspectives on Business Management.
