Overview
The MSc Social Research and Policy is designed to develop students' expertise in applying social research principles within real-world contexts, while fostering critical awareness and practical research skills relevant across a range of sectors.
Graduates of the programme will develop:
• A critical understanding of the economic, socio-cultural, and political factors that shape the practice of social research across diverse fields, including academia, government and policy, non-governmental organisations, business, and the media and creative industries. • The ability to identify and use reliable data sources to engage in interdisciplinary, critically informed discussions on a variety of contemporary social issues and policies that affect individuals and communities. • The skills to critically evaluate and assess evidence, outcomes, and impact, with a strong understanding of the theoretical and methodological foundations that underpin concepts such as trustworthiness, validity, authenticity, and reliability. • A reflective approach to the ethical and practical implications of social research designs and the use of qualitative and quantitative methodologies in addressing socio-cultural, economic, and political challenges and inequalities. • The capacity to apply social research knowledge in practical settings, working independently and collaboratively to deliver academically rigorous and ethically sound research projects.
The programme also offers flexibility in its final stage. Students may choose a dedicated work placement module accompanied by a related dissertation, or alternatively, opt to undertake a more extensive independent research dissertation on a topic of personal or professional relevance. This alternative does not require a formal placement and may draw upon prior or current employment experience.
