The near future will see society’s dependency on the Earth evolve, beginning with its need for resources: water, soil, fossil fuel, and mineral ores. Obtaining new sources of energy and material necessitates exploration. Existing resources need to be evaluated, maintained, and restored. Waste products require long-term sequestration. Ecosystem interactions need to be evaluated, and the potential for natural and man-made hazards must be assessed. This provides for a number of exciting opportunities for modern Earth scientists as explorers, evaluators, and managers. The Kimbell School of Geosciences at MSU Texas provides students with educational opportunities that prepares them for employment and further education. Courses incorporate the latest technology, information, and research techniques, and provide practical field experience along with classroom instruction. Graduates pursue vocations in water resource management, environmental assessment and consultation, mining, petroleum production/exploration, fundamental research, and education. Armed with a rigorous understanding of Earth’s materials and processes, geoscientists from MSU Texas are able to provide and maintain these resources while expanding views. The Geosciences track is a study program rooted in traditional coursework and the specializations of talented faculty. The coursework leads students through the investigation of minerals, rocks, fossils, sediments, economic deposits, surface processes, geophysical techniques, and field mapping. Students may select two or more additional classes that focus on an area of interest, including petroleum geology, oceanography, planetary geology, and natural hazards. This is coupled with MSU Texas' broad curriculum that produces well-rounded graduates ready for the challenges of a rapidly- changing society. The 121 hour program is designed to be completed in eight semesters with a summer field course.
