1-Term Pathway - International Incorporated Master's (IIM) - Continue to Master of Science - Social Research

The Pre-Masters program is designed for students who do not qualify for direct entry to a postgraduate degree at the University of Dundee. This may be due to the grades achieved in their undergraduate degree, their current qualifications not being equivalent to a UK undergraduate degree, or a desire to improve their academic and English language skills.

The Pre-Masters course will equip students with the advanced skills necessary to complete their postgraduate study at the University of Dundee. They can choose to study over one or two terms, depending on their academic qualifications and English language level. The one-term option offers a fast track route to their chosen degree course and is studied over three months. The two-term option is studied over six months and provides additional academic English and subject-related support.

Social Research Social research methods are essential means of providing evidence to examine ideas about society and are important for social scientists seeking to study specific problems or test theories. These methods are also fundamental tools of value to government, service providers, and businesses.

Students will gain skills in a diverse range of quantitative and qualitative research methods and engage with current research issues and external organizations. For example, some recent Research in Practice placements have been with:

The police (approaches to mental health issues) A local charity (women in homeless settings) A housing charity (experiences of private renters) An international development NGO (education for girls in the Global South) An organization supporting migrants in Scotland This course teaches students how to use research tools and encourages them to consider the broader implications of how knowledge can be constructed in various ways and for a diverse range of purposes.
