Overview
Master of Science - Forensic Science provides students with practical, analytical, and interpretative skills in forensic chemistry and forensic biology. It equips them to identify and quantify unknown materials related to a crime and to take responsibility for initial investigation and prioritisation. Throughout the programme, the curriculum addresses quality management systems in laboratory forensic science, including technique validation and approval, contamination avoidance, and the impact of cognitive bias on result interpretation. Students also develop the ability to communicate effectively with non-specialist audiences through both oral and written reports.
Critical knowledge of analytical chemistry, genetics, and biological techniques forms the core of the course.
On this programme, students will:
• Develop skills in presumptive and confirmative testing, and in the enhancement, development, and interpretation of trace evidence • Learn the significance of the forensic scientist’s role within the crime scene-to-court process • Train to act as expert witnesses in investigative or court settings • gain a detailed understanding of crime scene management and information synthesis, including the distinction between investigative and evidential potential • Complete substantial research and writing assignments requiring advanced academic and persuasive writing skills • Students join a diverse cohort of postgraduate learners from around the world, benefit from a wide range of specialist facilities, equipment, and collections, and learn from internationally recognised, research-active academic staff.
