Overview
The Juris Doctor is a professional law degree that provides comprehensive education in legal principles, analysis and practice. Students study core areas such as constitutional law, contracts, criminal law, property law, torts, civil procedure, legal ethics and legal research and writing.
Through case studies, advocacy exercises, practical assignments and experiential learning opportunities, students develop skills in critical thinking, legal reasoning, negotiation, oral advocacy and professional communication. Depending on the institution, students may also pursue specialized electives, clinics, internships or moot court activities.
Graduates may pursue careers in legal practice, government, business, public policy, advocacy and non-profit organizations. Additional licensing examinations, practical training and other regulatory requirements must typically be completed to practise law in the relevant jurisdiction.
