Integrated Foundation - Bachelor of Arts (Honours) - Fashion, Marketing and Communication
University of Derby - Derby
What you will study
The BA (Hons) Fashion, Marketing and Communication with Foundation Year is designed to develop fashion design skills while expanding understanding of key business principles through a combination of creative and practical study. At its core, fashion marketing focuses on supplying, disseminating, and managing information about brands, companies, or individuals for both public and press audiences. The course is suited to those who wish to be both creative and strategic, combining an interest in design and making with a desire to understand the business of fashion, ultimately supporting progression into fashion marketing careers.
Students gain valuable insight into the commercial elements of the fashion sector from an integrated perspective that encompasses emerging fashion design and marketing concepts.
The programme incorporates expertise from the BA (Hons) Fashion course to create a cohesive and bespoke approach to personal study. In the first year, students are introduced to the fundamentals of fashion design practice and market sensing for the ready-to-wear sector. The second year places greater emphasis on the commercial environment, with a focus on branding and influence, alongside opportunities to participate in national and international competitions, where recent students have achieved notable success. The third year provides an opportunity to further develop creative thinking and professional practice through a self-managed process of experimentation, risk-taking, and resolution, supported by modules dedicated to business and entrepreneurship that place creative activity within a strong commercial context.
The programme actively encourages second-year students to undertake an industry work placement, which also leads to the additional qualification of the Diploma in Professional Practice. Although placements can be demanding, they offer highly rewarding professional experience. Previous placements have included a wide range of renowned organisations such as Marks & Spencer, Temperley London, Erdem, Mother of Pearl, Preen, Aitor Throup, Tommy Hilfiger, and Roksanda, among others.
