This industry-accredited course offers a strategic overview of civil engineering and management issues. It addresses the challenges facing the construction industry and successfully combines structural engineering with advanced construction management.
This course is ideal for those students who are graduate engineers starting their career in the construction industry. Combining structural engineering with advanced construction management, the course addresses the challenges facing the construction industry. Students will study subjects that are specific and complementary to civil engineering, developing their problem-solving abilities. A structural design module will broaden and deepen their technical knowledge of specialised civil engineering areas.
This degree is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators, which includes the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institution of Structural Engineers, Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation and the Institute of Highway Engineers under licence from the Engineering Council and by CIOB. Kingston has excellent links with industry. Students have worked with Matra-Marconi Space Ltd, the National Health Service and British Gas.
Kingston University allow students to take the option of a 12-month work placement as part of their course. The responsibility for finding the work placement is with the student; the University cannot guarantee the placement, just the opportunity to undertake it. Students may find securing a professional placement difficult as they are highly competitive and challenging, but they are also incredibly rewarding. It is very important for students to prepare and apply themselves if this is the route they wish to take. Employers look for great written and oral communication skills and an excellent CV/portfolio. As the work placement is an assessed part of the course, it is covered by a student's Student Route visa.
Graduates have progressed into roles like construction manager, civil engineer, site engineer and sustainability consultant.
