Bachelor of Arts (Honours) - Education Studies and Criminology

University of Derby - Derby

What you will study

The BA (Hons) Education Studies and Criminology degree combines the study of human behaviour through the lens of criminal and community justice with a multidisciplinary social science approach to education. The programme examines how individuals are labelled as offenders and explores the relationships between crime, deviance, victimisation and key social divisions such as age, gender, sexuality, social class, race, ethnicity and religion.

In parallel, the education component investigates contemporary curriculum, policy and trends by drawing on sociology, history, psychology and philosophy. This provides a broad, critical understanding of how educational systems operate and the factors that shape policy and practice.

The programme brings theory to life through a strong practical focus. Criminology skills are developed through activities such as interviewing, negotiation, decision-making, research, argumentation and problem-based learning, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of criminal and community justice systems. The criminology teaching team works closely with courts, prisons and youth offender training centres, integrating this professional expertise into the learning experience.

Within the Education Studies modules, opportunities may include work placements, fieldtrips, study visits and international study experiences, enabling students to explore education within both local and global contexts.
