Integrated Foundation - Bachelor of Arts (Honours) - Applied Social Work

University of Derby - Derby

What you will study

The BA (Hons) Applied Social Work with Foundation Year is an applied course designed to prepare students to register and practise as qualified social workers, supporting people from diverse backgrounds to assess and address their needs. The four-year programme includes a foundation year, providing a gradual introduction to university-level study and essential skills for a career in social work.

The foundation year is suitable for those returning to formal education after a break, planning a career change, or who do not initially meet the entry requirements for the three-year honours degree. It offers insight into health and social care environments while helping students develop the knowledge and skills necessary for success in the full Applied Social Work degree, which is accredited by Social Work England, enabling practice as a qualified social worker upon meeting regulatory requirements.

The course builds a dynamic portfolio of skills and theoretical knowledge applicable across a variety of client settings. The academic team is experienced and committed to student development, ensuring a supportive learning environment. Graduates have pursued careers in child protection, mental health, disability and youth justice, and work with vulnerable or older adults, within settings such as hospitals, day centres, social services, residential centres, schools, and the voluntary sector. Qualified social workers are expected to continue professional development to stay current with sector trends and may choose to specialise in particular areas of practice.
