Langara College
Langara College Film Arts is an eight-month, intensive, collaborative, and comprehensive program for students wishing to work in today’s film industry as actors, writers, or directors. The Film Arts program offers post-accreditation certificates in three streams of study; Writing for the Screen, Acting for the Screen, and Directing for the Screen. Courses in film studies, film principles, and film practice overlap resulting in a creative and collaborative environment in which students will practice their skills with the other creators in each craft area. These overlapping courses are designed so students will develop a dynamic understanding of the film making process. Nevertheless, each certificate will be a stand-alone program. The film arts program is designed as three parallel paths, each one concentrating on its own area of expertise and resulting in a portfolio of work and a base of knowledge that will give the student a significant advantage when entering the workforce in the professional world of film production. Instructors are working professionals who bring their expertise and experience into the classroom.
Students in the Film Arts Writing Certificate will spend eight months immersed in the world of film and graduate with two, self-written festival quality films. As a collaborator with directors and actors, students will produce these films and gain invaluable on-set experience. Langara's year-end Film Arts Festival screening event will be the launch pad for the work that students' teams produces.
Writing Stream graduates will learn how to: • Write convincing proposals for film or video projects, and know where to shop them • Write a professionally formatted short, feature, television series "bible", and literary adaptation and/or children’s film. • Story-edit other people’s screenplays through evaluation and constructive criticism.
