De Montfort University Leicester

What you will study

The Engineering Year Zero course is designed for individuals who aspire to pursue a career in engineering but do not currently meet the entry requirements for an undergraduate degree. It is particularly suited to those returning to education, changing career paths, or entering higher education as mature students, offering a strong foundation to support their progression.

The course develops essential skills in science, mathematics, design, and IT, while also strengthening students’ confidence and academic capabilities. Students become part of a supportive academic community and benefit from access to specialist workshops and equipment, enabling practical, hands-on learning from the outset. Upon successful completion, students are able to progress directly to one of DMU’s BEng (Hons) or MEng engineering degree programmes, providing a clear pathway toward a career in engineering.

Aeronautical and aerospace engineering is one of the fastest-growing industries in the UK, offering a wide range of career opportunities in research, development, testing, and maintenance. This course is designed to prepare students for entry into this dynamic and evolving sector.

The programme is accredited by the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET), supporting students on their pathway towards achieving Chartered Engineer status. Throughout the course, students explore the core principles of aeronautical engineering, gaining in-depth knowledge in areas such as experimental and theoretical aerodynamics, aircraft design, flight dynamics and control, propulsion systems, flight simulation technologies, aircraft structures, and computational aerodynamics. The course combines practical, hands-on experience with advanced theoretical learning to ensure graduates are well prepared for industry.

Graduates are equipped for careers across the aeronautics and aerospace sectors, including roles in aircraft aerodynamics, wind turbine design and maintenance, aviation management, the defence industry, and maintenance, repair, and operations (MRO) services. Many graduates have progressed to positions with leading organisations such as Rolls-Royce, Airbus, BMW, and Siemens.
