Integrated Foundation - Bachelor of Science (Honours) - Computer Science
University of Derby - Derby
What you will study
The BSc (Hons) Computer Science with Foundation Year at Derby provides a comprehensive introduction to the fundamentals of computer science, allowing students to explore their interests and strengths in the field. The course offers flexibility, including the option to transfer to other programmes within the Computing and Mathematics portfolio after the first year. Expert academic staff, recognised as leading scientists, deliver the programme through interactive lectures, seminars, tutorials, and practical sessions that develop both technical skills and the ability to evaluate experimental procedures and data.
The course is closely aligned with industry needs and developed in collaboration with industrial practitioners, technologists, specialists, and professional bodies. Partnerships with local and international companies such as Microsoft, IBM, Intel, BT, Rolls-Royce, Toyota, CERN, Bloc Digital, Alstom, Bentley Motors, and JCB provide opportunities to work on real-world projects and gain practical experience. An optional placement year allows students to build industry experience, enhance career prospects, and develop confidence in professional settings.
Assessment is conducted entirely through coursework, portfolios, assignments, case studies, oral and graphic presentations, collaborative and interdisciplinary teamwork projects, and computer-based testing, with no written exams. In the third year, students complete an Individual Project module, applying research and innovation tools in a practical context while developing essential interpersonal and communication skills.
