Master of Arts (Honours) - Classics (Q800)

The University of Edinburgh

What you will study

The Master of Arts Classics program focuses on the study of the languages and literatures of the ancient Greeks and Romans. Ancient Greek, the language in which many fundamental concepts of western society were first expressed, is a key area of study. Additionally, Latin, the language of the powerful and long-lasting classical empire, served as the primary language for scholarship, record-keeping, and literature in western Europe for over a millennium.

This program combines in-depth philological work with the examination of Greek and Latin-speaking civilizations in various contexts, including political, religious, and philosophical. Students in this program will receive advanced and rigorous training in both ancient Greek and Latin. They will have the opportunity to read a wide range of classical literary works in their original language, spanning from archaic Greece to Late Antiquity, Byzantium, and the Middle Ages.
