University of Windsor
What you will study
Program Description The Bachelor of Arts (Honours) - Greek and Roman Studies program draws on the cultural richness of the ancient world to combine academic rigour with subject matter that is both personally engaging and relevant for any field of study. • Focuses on the Greek love affair with life (the quest for ideals of beauty, truth and justice) and the Roman sense of destiny and imperial greatness (the unceasing struggle against the forces of barbarism) • First-year courses include the civilizations of Greece and Rome and introductory Greek and/or Latin language • Immerses students in the art, literature, history and culture of the ancient world
Ancient Greece and Rome are the twin areas of interest in Greek and Roman Studies. Students will study periods foundational periods for these cultures—when Greeks and Romans were asking themselves profound questions. What is a citizen? A family? A god? A nation? What is beauty? What is justice? What is freedom? These questions are still important today.
Students will explore the social, political, artistic and religious aspects of the ancient Mediterranean world. Courses change their content from year to year and add to the diversity of offerings.
Courses in Greek and Latin will give students access to the great literary works of the ancient world as they were written, but no prior knowledge is required. Direct contact with the great ideas and achievements of distant but enduring cultures enlightens students in the choice of their own role in an ever-more complicated world. Popular degree combinations in recent years have included History, English, and political Science, though almost any other combination is also possible.
