Bachelor of Arts (Honours) - Sociology and Criminology (NCR)

Program Description Society today is complicated. Students will learn how to unravel its most urgent issues in this program that is focused on research, analysis and communication — skills relevant to a wide range of fields. Students can tailor their degree by picking courses that match their interests. The department is small, ensuring students will get lots of personal attention.

Students will learn: • Understanding human behaviour, communication, and interaction from a social perspective • Appreciating contemporary social, community and ethical issues and related public policy • Understanding and applying behavioural components of sociological theory • Understanding the ways in which various social, cultural, and community groups interrelate • Conducting, explaining, and interpreting sociological research and applying the findings • Appreciating the respective roles of various governmental, community, and social institutions

The criminology program has the distinct virtue of being situated in an interdisciplinary department and, thus, uniquely provides students with both breadth and depth of knowledge. Criminology systematically examines criminal activity, legal issues, policing, regulation, the criminal justice system, and security as major factors in society. It focuses on the causes, consequences, and control of crimes, illegalities and wrongdoings, criminal law, policing, prosecution, sentencing, punishment, and deviance. Sociology is the study of societies, social life, and social change. It investigates social, cultural and demographic issues in Canada and around the world. Topics covered include: sexuality, popular culture, inequality, migration, race, ethnicity, class, gender, values, health, family dynamics, law, social movements, institutions, and community.

This program combines sociological and criminological thinking and approaches to understand social relations, social institutions, organizations, interpersonal interactions, criminal activity, legal issues, and the criminal justice system and challenge common sense assumptions.
