Bachelor of Arts (Honours) - Sociology and Economics
University of Derby - Derby
What you will study
The degree combines Sociology and Economics to explore how social justice can be promoted across business, politics, and the public sector. It provides students with the opportunity to study key sociological themes alongside applied economic theory, perspectives, and approaches, preparing them for a wide range of graduate careers.
Sociology modules focus on understanding how people interact in diverse settings and how various factors influence these dynamics. This equips students with the insights and skills needed to not only comprehend the complexities of modern societies but also to intervene and make a positive impact. Economics modules develop students’ abilities in applied economic analysis, including the use of professional software, enabling them to solve business and organisational problems.
Students gain both quantitative and qualitative analytical skills essential for roles in business, public, and voluntary sector economics, as well as a foundation for postgraduate study in Economics. The sociological focus develops critical analysis, problem-solving, and social awareness skills applicable to a broad range of careers, offering insight into human behaviour, group interactions, and societal issues.
Practical experience is embedded throughout the course, with teaching approaches including industry guest speakers, live briefs, and projects set by organisations. Students can also opt for a placement year between years two and three to apply their knowledge in a real-world environment, building valuable professional experience prior to graduation.
