Bachelor of Arts (Honours) - History and Economics
University of Derby - Derby
What you will study
The Economics and History programme at Derby enables students to develop skills in applying economic theory, perspectives, and approaches to solve business and organisational problems. The course provides knowledge and capabilities in applied economic analysis and trains students to use the software commonly employed by leading professionals in the financial sector.
This programme is combined with the study of History, taking advantage of the rich historical context of Derby and Derbyshire, an important centre for trade, religious expression, industry, and Enlightenment thought. History courses examine key ideas and themes within the region and globally, covering an extensive range of topics from the sixteenth century to the modern day.
The Economics component develops the knowledge and skills necessary for applied micro- and macro-economic analysis in business, public, and voluntary sectors. Students gain both quantitative and qualitative analytical skills, preparing them for graduate management and financial roles or for progression to postgraduate Economics degrees for careers as professional economists. The History component focuses on developing verbal and written communication, teamwork, and the ability to analyse and summarise different types of data, enhancing employability upon graduation.
The degree can be tailored to individual interests and career goals through a selection of modules covering themes such as the Enlightenment period, global mobility, marketing and presenting the past, market failure analysis, sustainable business growth, and financial risk management. Teaching approaches are varied, including guest speakers from diverse industry backgrounds, live briefs, and projects set by external organisations, ensuring students graduate with practical experience.
An optional placement year provides the opportunity to apply skills in a real-world setting. Support is provided in securing placements and throughout the time in industry, offering valuable experience, professional networking opportunities, and insight into potential career paths prior to graduation.
