What you will study

Program Description The PGCE Secondary Art and Design enables students to address all aspects of art and design, gain experience on placements, and develop the skills and knowledge to teach art and design at secondary level.

This Postgraduate Certificate Education (PGCE) Secondary Art and Design course leads to the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), qualifying students to teach the 11-18 age group in secondary schools in England and Wales.

Students will be taught by staff with national reputations as experts in the field of art and design in education, and together students will examine a range of pedagogical approaches to art teaching. The University of Reading will train them to be high quality, flexible teachers.

Reading's incredible purpose-built art and design studios with extensive resources and equipment will provide the setting for you to address all aspects of secondary art and design, including specialist expertise in areas such as digital art, textiles, photography, ceramics, printmaking, painting, drawing, contemporary and historical studies.

In the Secondary PGCE course, students are required to carry out three placements in two different age groups - ensuring they receive a broad range of experiences. Two placements must be undertaken in a school setting but the third can be taken in a different setting - allowing students to sample teaching in an alternative environment.
