Overview

Studying law as 50% of the degree gives students a thorough understanding of the discipline of law and the role of law in regulating society; however law as a Joint (50%) option does not lead to a qualifying law degree. Law is an interesting and important subject for study, involving consideration of notions of justice, relationships with one another and with the state, and the processes for effecting change in society. Studying Criminology as 50% of the degree gives students a thorough understanding of the role of criminology in society. Year One introduces students to criminology and serves as a foundation for the second and third years. By Year Three, students will be able to study from a range of areas that include: Crimes of the powerful; Community and public involvement in crime and criminal justice; The risk society; Criminal victimization; Youth crime, youth justice and social control. In Year Three students may wish to study for their dissertation if they have completed the research methods modules. Alternatively, students can take the applied social research module and carry out a piece of research commissioned by a local agency.
