What you will study
Studying physiotherapy at the University of Derby equips students with the expertise, knowledge, and skills required to practice as a physiotherapist. The expert team at Derby prepares students to be integral members of multidisciplinary health and social care teams, providing them with the clinical, leadership, digital, and research skills needed for the future. The course is practice-based, offering a stimulating learning environment focused on the efficacy and holistic well-being of patients.
The program holds professional credibility, being accredited by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP). This ensures that graduates are eligible to apply for HCPC registration as physiotherapists and for membership with the CSP upon completion.
Students will learn in a health and social care-focused environment, collaborating alongside allied health, nursing, mental health, and social care practitioners. With staff members bringing expertise from a wide array of fields, students will explore what constitutes effective physiotherapeutic practice, examine the theories and subjects that influence it, and apply their knowledge through work-based training opportunities.
Students will be inspired by a dedicated and highly skilled teaching team, made up of experienced and registered health and social care professionals, who provide valuable insights into various aspects of healthcare. Throughout their studies, students will also receive support from a personal tutor. The teaching team is actively involved in research, ensuring students stay informed about the latest developments and trends in the field. Additionally, staff contribute to national special interest groups and bring expertise in specialist areas of practice.
The program is strongly focused on practice-based learning. After completing the foundation year, students will engage in practice-based learning blocks, which are integrated into the rest of the course. During these blocks, students will work full-time in practice for a set number of weeks. The aim is to provide a variety of practice-based learning experiences to help students develop a comprehensive set of skills, preparing them to become qualified practitioners.
Upon successful completion of the foundation year, students can progress onto the BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy program, with nearly half of the course dedicated to exciting opportunities for skill development in real-world settings.
The course includes five periods of practice-based learning, typically undertaken full-time for a set number of weeks each year. These placements, primarily in the East Midlands, take place across a variety of settings, including the NHS, private, and voluntary sectors. Students will gain hands-on experience in how physiotherapists work with individuals from different age groups and those facing various physical and mental health challenges. This practical experience helps students build a comprehensive skill set and make more informed decisions about their future career paths.
The university arranges all placements to ensure that students are supported by qualified physiotherapists, trained to assess and develop their practical skills.
