Master of Arts - Journalism
University of Derby - Derby
What you will study
The Master’s degree in Journalism is a flexible programme that allows students to select modules aligned with their interests and career aspirations. The course introduces the role of journalism in democracies and explores the impact of journalism and news media on societies. It develops research, critical thinking, and analytical skills, culminating in a thesis or practice-based project.
Students are encouraged to question the world and examine societal structures. Teaching takes place in purpose-built journalism facilities, including radio studios, a television studio, video editing suites, Mac suites, and a newsroom equipped with the latest software. The programme allows specialisation in areas of interest, with opportunities to explore key national and international debates and current affairs. The thesis or practice-based project can focus on a topic, subject, or genre of journalism chosen by the student.
The programme blends traditional and contemporary journalism skills. Students are guided to critically analyse news and current affairs, enhancing their ability to synthesise information and present arguments. Optional modules include Data Journalism and Data Science, Investigative Journalism and Politics, and Audience Studies, providing insights into data analysis, the relationship between journalism and politics, and audience engagement with media.
The academic team maintains extensive links with media organisations, individual journalists, and industry bodies, enabling students to access work experience and projects with national, regional, and local newspapers, the BBC, independent radio, and specialist reporting groups such as the BBC’s combined data unit and the Centre for Investigative Journalism.
Learning is delivered through lectures, seminars, tutorials, debates, workshops, and guest speakers, complemented by self-directed study. A blended learning strategy supports face-to-face teaching with additional resources available via a virtual learning environment. Assessment includes summative evaluations such as essays, oral presentations, reports based on qualitative and quantitative data, and critically reflective pieces, alongside smaller-scale tasks that provide ongoing feedback to develop strengths, identify areas for improvement, and refine journalistic skills.
