Bachelor of Science (Honours) - Earth Sciences

The BSc (Hons) Earth Sciences highlights the critical role of Earth sciences in supporting the sustainable future of the planet and society by developing in-depth understanding of natural hazards, climate change, Earth processes, green energy, sustainable development and natural resources. This diverse and applied programme draws on interdisciplinary knowledge from geology, geography, climatology, hydrology, chemistry and physics, alongside the natural, environmental, planetary and social sciences. As an applied subject, the course develops strong practical knowledge and skills that prepare graduates for entry into a rapidly growing UK and international Earth science employment sector.

Practice-based learning is central to the programme, reinforcing understanding of Earth processes from the planetary to the atomic scale while exploring complex relationships between the Earth and society, such as balancing effective climate change mitigation with the provision of affordable clean energy. The curriculum develops an evidence-based understanding of how to manage, mitigate and adapt to natural hazards including volcanic eruptions, flooding, climate change and earthquakes. These themes build on comprehensive Earth science competencies developed throughout the degree, covering areas such as oceans, climate and volcanoes, as well as minerals, evolution and fossils, to create a deep understanding of how the planet operates.

Field, laboratory and software-based skills form essential components of professional Earth science training. Throughout the degree, students gain proficiency and confidence in applying a wide range of traditional scientific methods alongside cutting-edge technologies. Examples include hydrological fieldwork supported by laboratory-based water quality analysis and computer simulations of groundwater flow, and modern geological mapping that combines traditional techniques with digital data collection using iPads, ground-penetrating radar and aerial drone surveys. A holistic approach to learning is adopted throughout the programme, ensuring graduates are well prepared for professional practice as confident Earth scientists.
