Probability and Statistics is a specialised research area within the Mathematics postgraduate research programmes (MPhil), offering students the opportunity to undertake advanced study in both theoretical and applied statistical sciences. The programme supports a wide range of research topics, enabling students to develop expertise in areas that address complex quantitative problems across multiple disciplines.
Key areas of research include multivariate statistical analysis, time series analysis, statistical modelling, optimal experimental design, stochastic optimisation, and change point detection. The programme also encompasses applications in fields such as medical statistics, fisheries, mathematical finance, and probabilistic methods in areas like number theory and search processes. Additional topics include the study of random fields and advanced probabilistic modelling techniques.
Students benefit from a strong research environment that encourages both methodological development and real-world application, preparing them for careers in academia, industry, finance, and data-driven sectors.
