Cardiff University - Cathays Park
This course addresses the need for creative professionals who possess IT skills, digital fabrication skills, simulation software skills, or the ability to design custom-software development tools in order to solve unique design problems. The multidisciplinary approach employed by the course provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to discover innovative computational methods for application in the creative and design industries. Specifically, the course focuses on form-finding using parametric and generative methods, preparing digital information for thorough analysis, and integrating the principles of digital fabrication into the initial stages of design.
Students will receive instruction from experts in the fields of architecture, computer science, and engineering, resulting in a distinctly interdisciplinary approach to design. The course is founded on the concept of rigorous creativity, which combines algorithmic thinking, systematic parametric design, analytic methods, creative intuition, and tectonic sensibilities to produce design outcomes that surpass those achieved through traditional methods.
Throughout the course, students have the opportunity to develop and specialize in areas of personal interest by choosing from a range of optional modules and selecting a dissertation topic. Potential areas of specialization include algorithmic thinking in parametric design and form-finding, performance-based design and analysis, and design for digital fabrication.
