What you will study
The BA (Hons) Education Studies and English degree at Derby offers a rich, varied and intellectually challenging academic experience. The English component goes beyond the close analysis of literature to explore the cultural and historical contexts in which texts are produced and read. This includes engagement with art, film, philosophy, linguistics, sociology and contemporary cultural politics.
Students are introduced to a wide range of cultural expressions from different parts of the world and across diverse historical periods. Opportunities to broaden experience are available through work-based learning projects, study visits to cultural and heritage institutions, and lectures delivered by guest speakers.
The Education Studies element provides an intellectually stimulating foundation that develops a strong understanding of educational theory, current policy and professional practice.
The curriculum brings together insights from history, psychology, sociology and philosophy to offer a comprehensive view of education and educational equality. Modules examine the role of education in society and investigate how moral and social issues influence learning. Practical application is supported through work placement opportunities integrated throughout the course, enabling students to connect theory with real-world educational settings.
