Integrated Foundation - Bachelor of Arts (Honours) - Education Studies

The BA (Hons) Education Studies with Foundation Year provides a comprehensive introduction to education, covering early years through to lifelong learning. The foundation year helps students build confidence, develop essential academic skills, and gain a strong understanding of key educational principles while benefiting fully from the resources and support available at the University of Derby.

The programme offers flexibility to align learning with individual interests and career ambitions through pathways in Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) or Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). Practical work placements provide valuable hands-on experience that enhances employability and deepens understanding of education in real-world contexts. The course also offers international field trip opportunities, with previous students travelling to countries such as The Gambia, Morocco, and Kenya to explore global perspectives on education.

Throughout the degree, students examine the role of education in society, considering how moral and social issues influence learning across various settings both inside and outside traditional school environments. The curriculum brings together insights from history, psychology, sociology, and philosophy to deliver a broad and intellectually stimulating understanding of educational theory and equality. Specialist pathways further allow students to build on this foundation and develop focused expertise in areas such as SEND or TESOL.
