What you will study
The stimulating Materials Science and Engineering BEng degree programme provides students with a thorough understanding of the properties of materials – from metals to plastics – essential for the development of new and improved products. If students like solving problems creatively and relish the opportunity to combine science, maths and engineering to understand surrounding materials – from bricks to body scanners – behave, and how they can be used and improved to develop new products, then this Materials Science and Engineering BEng degree has been made for them. Students will be taught by lecturers who are global experts in their field. enabling them to gain strong theoretical and practical skills in Materials Science and Engineering. As a student of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Birmingham, students will get a front-row seat to the latest developments in the field. There is an opportunity to apply for a year in industry during the degree, usually between Year 2 and Year 3. Academic members of staff will help students to find suitable internships, review their application materials, and assist and mentor them throughout their year in industry. A year in industry is an invaluable opportunity to take on a role within a company, apply the theoretical knowledge of the degree course to real-world issues and will enhance their career prospects. Accredited by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3) on behalf of the Engineering Council for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as an Incorporated Engineer and partially meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer.
