Year Zero in Engineering (H108) - Continue to Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) (Honours) - Mechanical Engineering (H301)
De Montfort University Leicester
What you will study
The Engineering Year Zero course is designed for individuals who aspire to pursue a career in engineering but do not currently meet the entry requirements for an undergraduate degree. It is particularly suited to those returning to education, changing career paths, or entering higher education as mature students, offering a strong foundation to support their progression.
The course develops essential skills in science, mathematics, design, and IT, while also strengthening students’ confidence and academic capabilities. Students become part of a supportive academic community and benefit from access to specialist workshops and equipment, enabling practical, hands-on learning from the outset. Upon successful completion, students are able to progress directly to one of DMU’s BEng (Hons) or MEng engineering degree programmes, providing a clear pathway toward a career in engineering.
Mechanical Engineering underpins many aspects of modern life and plays a crucial role in advancing technologies across sectors such as transport, healthcare, construction, and robotics. The course is designed to reflect this breadth, providing students with the knowledge and skills needed to contribute to a wide range of industries.
The programme is closely aligned with cutting-edge research, ensuring that teaching is informed by developments in areas such as aerodynamics, fluid systems, transportation, manufacturing, and sustainable development. Students benefit from access to a purpose-built Mechanical Engineering Laboratory, which supports the study of thermofluids, solid mechanics, and dynamics through practical, hands-on experience.
Throughout the course, students build a strong foundation in engineering principles and analytical problem-solving. Core modules, including General Engineering Tools and Principles and Mechanical Design and Manufacturing, introduce key concepts, while more advanced modules such as Design and Project Management, Advanced Mechanical Materials, and Professional Practice and the Engineering Business Environment help develop professional, project management, and transferable skills essential for a career in the engineering industry.
