What you will study

This course offers a bespoke learning experience in commercial photography, preparing students for careers across the international creative industries. Students develop professional digital workflows and gain experience in a range of digital capture techniques, both in the studio and on location. The course combines creative and conceptual approaches informed by contemporary practices, offering a dynamic and industry‑respected learning experience. Many alumni now work as prominent photographers, commissioners, art directors, and in other roles across the global photographic sector.

At Ravensbourne, the learning environment is dynamic and collaborative, thriving on knowledge exchange and innovation. The course builds on these core principles with an exciting curriculum that reflects the social, ethical, and environmental dimensions of the modern photographic industry.

In the first year, students gain essential technical and creative skills, professional workflow experience, and a solid foundation in visual literacy. Through hands‑on learning, they explore high‑end digital capture, location and studio work, and creative collaboration with models and production teams. Students learn to think conceptually, develop ideas into outcomes, and contextualise their work within commercial and academic frameworks.

As they progress, students have the opportunity to specialise within three key study areas—Sport, Fashion, and Editorial/Advertising—enabling informed choices about career direction and skills development. Each pathway offers distinctive learning experiences, from sports location shoots to studio work for fashion clients and sophisticated image creation for advertising brands. Throughout, students are supported by an expert teaching team, industry guests, and practising professionals.

In the final year, students create a professional image portfolio of contemporary photographic work, critiqued by industry experts. This provides valuable professional feedback and ensures they are ready to enter the next stage of their careers. Drawing on the strengths of its staff, alumni network, and Ravensbourne’s reputation for creativity and innovation, the course offers a vibrant, forward‑thinking education for the next generation of commercial photographers.

This Integrated Foundation Year provides an essential introduction to the creative, technical, and theoretical foundations of media communication and design. The course encourages students to explore how ideas are developed and conveyed across different media formats through practical workshops, studio projects, and critical analysis.

Students will gain a solid understanding of narrative construction, symbolism, colour theory, and aesthetic principles, while cultivating creative techniques in character development, genre exploration, sequencing, and storytelling. Technical skills are developed through hands-on training in industry-standard software such as Photoshop, Lightroom, Premiere Pro, After Effects, and Audition, alongside practical experience in photography, broadcasting, and multimedia production.

The curriculum covers every stage of the production process — from pre-production planning and creative conceptualisation to production management and post-production editing. Emphasis is placed on the social, cultural, ethical, and technological contexts shaping contemporary media, including issues of AI, data privacy, diversity, and representation.

By the end of the foundation year, students will have built a comprehensive skill set in visual communication, creative media production, and design thinking, preparing them for progression into undergraduate study in media, design, film, communication, or related creative disciplines.
