Bachelor of Arts (Honours) - History with Economics (2-year degree) (HEC2)
University of Buckingham - Main Campus
What you will study
The BA History (Hons) with Economics option combines two closely connected disciplines through a major/minor structure. Often described as the ‘motor of history’, economic activity is understood within its wider historical context, shaped by political, legal, technological, and social factors. Many History modules, which make up two-thirds of the degree, focus on economic trends, change, and key events. The Economics component provides insight into areas such as the history of economic thought and demonstrates how historically shaped economic systems continue to operate today. This combination develops both advanced written analysis and communication skills alongside strong numerical and analytical abilities, producing graduates who are highly employable across a wide range of sectors.
History is one of the most popular subjects among UK university students, offering valuable insights into today’s rapidly changing world through historical perspective. Employers value history graduates for their ability to think independently, work under pressure, and construct well-evidenced and coherent arguments. The field of historical research continues to expand, supported by unprecedented digital access to archival materials.
The BA History programme at Buckingham has been carefully developed by an experienced team of historians. Students begin with survey courses covering major political, economic, and cultural themes in the history of Britain and Europe from the 1500s to the present day, before progressing to more specialised areas such as empire, global migration, and heritage studies. The programme concludes with an independent dissertation that brings together the research and analytical skills developed over the course of study. The degree equips students not only with historical knowledge but also with the ability to think critically and write effectively as historians.
